The city of Tampa has been benefitting from the University of South Florida even before the construction of the USF Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS). It would gain much more so now that the CAMLS will start operating in almost full capacity in March 2012.

According to the Chronicle of Higher Education 2009-2010 Almanac, the USF has a yearly economic impact of $3.7 billion on the Tampa Bay region. With nearly 13,000 employees, it is the fifth largest employer in the region and the third largest in Hillsborough County. The university is also a significant social driver, as it is the fourth in the country in the number of students relying on federal Pell grants to finance their college education and 20 percent of USF students are the first in their families to go to college.

The USF’s achievements and continuing research in science, engineering, technology, health care, match, education and financial services have been among the main factors for the relocation of technology and health companies to the Tampa Bay region. Over the five-year period to 2009, the university increased its patent achievements by 200 percent, making USF second in the entire state of Florida in the number of patents awarded. According to Tampa Bay Times, the USF is ninth among universities worldwide in new patents achieved.

The CAMLS is a $38-million three-story 90,000-square-foot medical learning center, the biggest of its kind in the world, and is expected to train 60,000 medical professionals every year. According to CAMLS medical director John Armstrong, among the facility’s most significant asset is its system that enables doctors, nurses, technicians and other medical professionals to train together.

The Surgical and Interventional Training Center is housed in the ground floor, the Education Center occupies most of the second floor and the Virtual Patient Care Center and the Tampa Bay Research and Innovation Center are housed in the third floor. Among the training and simulation rooms are a robotics training room, a trauma operating room, a hybrid operating room, surgical labs, training pharmacies, expandable classrooms, and a 200-seat learning auditorium.

With all types of health and medical professionals coming to the city of Tampa to visit or train at CAMLS, it is expected that hotels, restaurants and other businesses will benefit. One sector that continues to also greatly gain from the growth of the University of South Florida (USF) and its Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) is the Tampa real estate market.
